Summary

This is my solution to the loading gear issues common to the Sony LAM and Awia ADN-1 Type MiniDisc hifi units.

One of the features that makes this unit great is its unique CD and MD loading mechanism, with the front panel sliding to reveal the drives. However, a common failure is stripped or cracked gears. These are a set of replacement gears to allow you to repair your unit.

I use a ABS like resin, try and find something with minimum shrinkage else you will need to refine the print size.

Using supports, I put a raft on the bed and then many tiny columns about 1.5mm high to each tooth of the gear. This allows room for the resin to flow, resulting in clean holes, and is easy to clean up after printing. The supports can be crumbled away with your fingers after printing.

Post-Printing

Building the assembly

You will need a steel rod 2mm in diameter and 67mm long. When cutting the rod to size, ensure that the edges are smoothed off.

On the right is the original gear. It is missing a tooth, I used it to position the gear on the rod. I use hot water to heat the gear and rod to make assembly easier. I used a 2mm drill bit to clean the holes on the gear. I didn't glue the gears on. I think it is better to allow them to slip if they need to. There is plenty of friction. Obviously, they will wear down in time, but hopefully a good few times.
