Summary

You are painting a door, perhaps, or for whatever reason can't put the lock back on your deadbolt before bed. This plug fills the hole and screws in place, without exposing any hardware to the outside, and can probably be ready in 30-60 min.

Is it secure? Maybe, although a perp might drill the plastic clear enough for a screwdriver, which can draw the bolt mechanism. (New) I added a pocket for a washer or coin to muddy the waters against drilling.

Security pointers:

  1. Recess and fit the plug tight to the door cutout so that prying the edge is a hassle.
  2. (New) Place an M3 washer into the anti-drill pocket (or resize it for a penny). Ideally a drill bit would catch on the washer's ID and spin freely, or if the perp gets aggressive they'll end up rendering your bolt inoperable when they over-drill through the washer. More likely the perp will just get confused after they thought they made it through your plastic but then they can't get their screwdriver to move the bolt. Remember they can't see what's behind the plastic and the odds are they've never seen my plug design before. Hopefully.
  3. Pick a color for your print so it looks plausibly like a lock from a distance. This may be the most important thing. From the street, you see a circle that could be a lock for all you know, do you approach and scrutinize? I think this is 10x better than leaving your bolt mechanism blatantly exposed.
  4. Print with extra side-walls to support woodscrew threads, otherwise it can end up a bit weak against prying. Also maybe 1-2mm thick bottom layer can make it a little tougher against knives and screwdrivers, although this is another area where I doubt the average perp is going to have an inkling that this is 3DP and it might be vulnerable to those tools. You could also go 100% solid infill, but don't forget this is just temporary.

So after placing this plug with woodscrews, you can turn the deadbolt with a screwdriver from the inside, and get some rest while your paint dries, or while the replacement lock you ordered ships, or whatever the situation.

I have an STL setup with a 52.5mm OD and 23.2mm center-center screw spacing (on centerline) and #8 wood-screws, and a M4-washer sized anti-drill pocket. My defaults may fit a few Schlage deadbolts.

But I also include the OpenSCAD file. You just need 3 to 5 measurements to make it fit. There's an adjustment for screws that are above or below the bolt centerline.
