Summary

The board game Eclipse has a hex map, which can be built differently every time.

This tile holder can assemble into any configuration as the game evolves to hold the tiles in place.

Each holder has a slightly beveled lip to make it easy to drop the tiles in place.

It connects with a jigsaw piece, which has just enough slop to be easy to assemble but not pull apart. I have it set to 0.04" for my SLA printer. Also, the positive jigsaw piece is not as thick than the negative jigsaw piece slot intentionally. That way, if the holders do not lie perfectly flat on the table, a positive jigsaw piece does not stick up inside of its neighbor to keep the tile from lying flat.

There is one odd thing about this however; one of the three jigsaw pieces is "backward". This allows the tile holder to be printed such that no scaffolding is needed for acute corners and the fit is therefore better. Scaffolding only touches square corners which can be easily reached and filed to remove any scaffolding debris. See the screen shot above for suggested printing at 22 degrees (for SLA). Any configuration can still be assembled, but the orientation of the tile holders matters. One of the pictures above shows a colored chit on each corner which is faced by the backward jigsaw piece. The holders needs to be assembled in this pattern.

Post-Printing

5 points need filing to remove scaffolding debris: the bottom negative jigsaw piece, the upper outside edge of the two upper negative jigsaw pieces, and the lower edge of the two lower positive jigsaw pieces. This will be obvious after printing. Look at the picture of the scaffolding sample to see the attachment points.
